Important Information when Visiting Canada
DRIVING TIPS
Speed limits in Canada are: 50 km/h in the city, 90 km/h on the roads, and 100 km/h on the highway.
Most roads in Canada are free. You can travel between the main cities on well-maintained, 2 or 3-lane streets. And there are also some toll roads that function automatically by taking a photo of the license plate. In the case of rented vehicles, the payments on the road are done at the end of the rental.
In Canada it is mandatory to travel with lights on at all times, even during the day.
You can turn to the right at a red light if the road is clear, unless otherwise indicated.
In Canada you’ll find carpool lanes. These highway lanes are exclusive for those sharing a vehicle. The pavement is marked with a diamond shape.
On some Canadian roadways there are rest areas on the side of the road where you can stop, stretch your legs, go to the restroom, or have something to eat.
RENTING A CAR IN CANADA
To drive a rental car, you must comply with the minimum age requirement of 25. In Dorval and Mississauga you can rent if you are between 23 and 24 years of age, with an additional charge of $25 CAD per day, without being able to rent luxury or special vehicles. In Thompson you may also rent if you are between the ages of 18 and 24 with an additional charge of $14.95 per day. In Vancouver an additional charge will be required if the renter is between 19 and 24 years old ($20 CAD). In Winnipeg, you’ll be required to pay $10 CAD per day if you are between 21 and 24 years old.
You’ll need civil liability insurance on every rental vehicle in Canada. In Dorval and Mississauga you can obtain this coverage through the rental, or by providing your own proof of insurance. In Vancouver, in case you don’t have coverage accepted by the Insurance Corporation of British Colombia (ICBC), you’ll need to pay for damages and third-party liability insurance when renting a vehicle. In Winnipeg, all rentals include free, limited insurance. Your rental can have compulsory insurance that will result in additional charges at the time of renting. The credit card insurance coverage is not accepted as a valid insurance policy in Winnipeg, and you will have to provide a valid private or corporate insurance policy.
Children under the age of 9 must use a special car seat. The offices of Mississauga, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Dorval offer this seat for an additional cost (subject to availability).
Plan your trip and pull up GPS directions before starting your drive. Having an approximate idea of where you’re headed will make driving easier. In addition, it is very important to know the places you’ll be visiting, so it is always good to know the most favorable routes according to the type of vehicle you’ve rented, that way you can reach your destination quicker through an alternative route.
When it comes time to return the vehicle, the automobile must be returned with the same amount of gasoline as it had when it was retrieved.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTS FOR RENTING A CAR IN CANADA
Valid Driver’s License – You’ll need a driver’s license from your home country to drive in Canada, and your passport (both up-to-date).
Proof of Insurance – If you plan to self-insure, we’ll need proof of personal insurance with the name of the renter on the policy, and showing collision and civil liability insurance with coverage for bodily injury and property damage.
Method of Payment – You’ll need a credit card (main driver is the cardholder) to pay for the rent and security deposit. The deposits vary according to the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is reimbursed when the vehicle has been returned in the same condition in which it was received at the office, it could take several days up to a week for this to be processed.
